What is polyurethane foam? Polyurethane foam is reticulated polyurethane foam with extra open cells which permits maximum water drainage and air circulation. Reticulated foam is a very porous and low density solid foam. Only the linear boundaries where the bubbles meet remain in a reticulated foam. The solid component of a reticulated foam may be an organic polymer like polyurethane, a ceramic or a metal. Up to 98% of the faces are removed in commercial reticulated foam.

A polyurethane is any polymer which is composed of a chain of organic units joined by urethane  links. Polyurethane polymers are formed through step-growth polymerization by reacting a monomer with another monomer in the presence of a catalyst. High density polyurethane foam are applied to the flexible manufacture, rigid foam insulation panel, high-resilience foam seating, microcellular foam seals and gaskets, electrical potting compounds and durable elastomeric wheels, etc.

The  reticulated foams and open cell foam also have the added benefit of an antimicrobial treatment to help prevent the buildup of bacteria which can cause nasty odours. Reticulated filter foam is ideal for use in outdoor furniture and marine environments where moisture can be a problem with conventional foam.
The reticulated polyurethane foam can also be used to filter water. FDF can be cut and shaped like normal foam.
